Charlottetown Police Services are providing suggestions to reduce your odds of becoming a victim of property crime.

Theft from vehicles – The vast majority of thefts from vehicles that occur in the City of Charlottetown require no forced entry. Theft from vehicles is a crime of opportunity. Thieves will target vehicles that are left unlocked.

A recent trend is thieves stealing purses and wallets from vehicles and using credit/debit cards that have tap features enabled.  This trend could easily be eliminated if people did not leave their wallets and purses inside their vehicles.  Most of these thefts occur from vehicles that are NOT locked. By simply not leaving these items in your vehicle and keeping the doors locked, using stolen credit/debit cards would be virtually eliminated. Two tips:

• Remove valuable from your vehicle
• Lock your doors

Theft from sheds – Sheds also get targeted by thieves who tend to steal items like power tools, chainsaws, whipper  snippers, and sporting items such snow boards and bicycles.

Unlike theft from vehicles, thieves will use force to gain entry in many cases.  Thieve will carry bolt cutters and pry bars to help them gain entry.  As such, Police suggest more time be spent by home owners to re-enforce the sheds.  Some tips include:

• Sufficient lighting at nigh time.
• Re-enforce windows and door frames
• Purchase shrouded shackle padlocks. Although more expensive to purchase, these are designed to be more difficult to cut and breach.
• Itemize your personal property – Record the make, model and serial numbers of your items.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to several complaints of possible impaired drivers over the weekend, three of which involved collisions and have led to criminal code charges.

On Saturday Nov 2nd at approximately 4:30 pm, Police were called to a two vehicle collision on Kensington Road.  The driver of one of the vehicles displayed signs of impairment by  alcohol and was arrested  A 52 year old Charlottetown woman has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.  No injuries were reported.

On Saturday Nov 2nd at approximately 10:30 pm, Police responded to a complaint of a vehicle hitting a light pole in a parking lot on the Brackley Point Rd.   Police located the vehicle a short time later on Mount Edward Road  and conducted a traffic stop.  The driver displayed signs of impaired by alcohol and was arrested.  A 20 year old Charlottetown man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

On Sunday morning at 4:30 am, Police responded to a complaint of a vehicle “hung up” on a flower bed at the Hillsborough Community Centre.  Upon arrival, Police located the vehicle stuck in a flower bed.   The female driver, a 22 year old Alliston woman was arrested and subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The three accused’s will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Thursday October 31, 2019

At approximately 9:32 am Thursday morning, Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Fitzroy Street. A female driver lost control of her vehicle and struck 3 parked vehicles. The officer determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol and was arrested. A 65 year old Charlottetown female was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services Major Crime Unit have concluded an investigation into a historical sexual assault complaint and have charged an 83 year old Charlottetown man with sexual assault and sexual interference.  The offences date back from 2009 to 2014.

The accused has been released with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a credit card being fraudulently used at a local business.

The complainant noticed that his credit card was missing when he received a text message on his phone saying that his card had just been used at a local Charlottetown business.

Police attended the business and located the persons that had just used the card.  As a result of the investigation, a 16 year old male has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, fraudulent use of a credit card and breach of probation. A second youth, a 17 year old female has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and fraudulent use of a credit card.

The credit card is believed to have been stolen from a vehicle.

The male remains in custody and will appear in court later today.  The female was released and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to an assault complaint that occurred at 2:00 am Saturday morning at a residence on St Peters Road.

Through the course of this investigation, it was determined that an assault did not occur however, a 24 year old Charlottetown male was arrested and charged with Breach of Probation and was brought before the Courts the next day and released with conditions.

And second person that had driven to the residence was observed to be displaying  signs of impairment by alcohol and was subsequently arrested. Police queried the license plate and discovered that the license plate had been reported stolen earlier in the day.  A 38 year old female was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime.

Both individual will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating the theft of a vehicle that occurred sometime betweeen Friday 8:00 pm and Saturday morning 8:00 am. .

The vehicle is a grey 2017 Ford Edge, bearing PEI plate AATF.

It was stolen from Prince Street between Fitzroy and Euston Streets.

Charlottetown Police Services is investigation the theft of a custom mountain bike from the Richmond Street area at approximately 8:10 am yesterday morning (Oct 24).

Charlottetown Police Services have made an arrest in relation to several investigations of shoplifting that occurred over the last 36 hours.

Over a period of 36 hours three separate occurrences of shoplifting from the Queen Street and Oak Street Liquor Stores were reported to Police.  Last night at 10:00 pm a 26 year old Charlottetown male was arrested and charged with these thefts.  The accused has been charged with 3 counts of theft under $5000 dollars and 3 counts of failing to comply with an Undertaking given to a Justice of the Peace.

The accused will appear in Court for a remand hearing later today.
