Disturbance Leads to Charges

Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of an agitated male on Weymouth Street.  Upon arrival, Police spoke to the male about the nature of the complaint.  Without notice, the male suddenly lunged at Officers at which point he was arrested and taken into custody.

A 35 year old Charlottetown man has been charged with two counts of assaulting a Police Officer and one count of resisting arrest.   The accused has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on January 16th.

Charlottetown Police Services received a complaint of a fraud attempt involving a local Charlottetown business.  Police are alerting businesses of this scam as a means of prevention.

The fraud is known as “CEO fraud”, “Wire fraud” or “business executive scam”.  In this particular case, an employee of a local business received an email from an executive of the company (correct name on the email, but upon closer examination, the email address was altered and not from the legitimate sender).  The email instructed the employee that a financial transaction was required and a large sum of money needed to be wired.  In this case, the scam was detected before any funds were disbursed.

A sure way to prevent this type of scam/fraud is to always confirm the transaction by phone or in person with the originator of the email.

This type of scam is not overly common, with Charlottetown Police Services having received approximately 3 such reports in 2019.

On January 8th, at approximately 7:00 pm, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver that got his vehicle stuck in snow on Spring Lane.

Police located the vehicle and driver who was in the process of attempting to get the vehicle out of the snow.  The driver displayed signs of impairment by alcohol and was arrested.

A 44 year old Kingston, PEI male was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

On Friday at 6:30 pm, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver on University Avenue.  Police were able to locate the vehicle and determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

A 66 year old Charlottetown male was subsequently charged with refusing to provide a breath sample and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

At 6:30 am January 2nd, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a disturbance on Euston Street.  Upon arrival Police learned that a male had been in the business, was intoxicated, was causing a disturbance and had fled on foot.   Other responding Officers located the male at another property nearby and made the arrest.

A 27 year old Charlottetown male was charged with Causing a Disturbance, Break and Enter and Resist Arrest. The accused was released later in the day and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Shortly before 9:00 am on January 1st, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a call of a possible impaired driver on St Peters Road.

Officers located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over however, the vehicle did not stop for Police and continued driving at a slow rate of speed.  Police were eventually able to stop the suspect vehicle and arrested both occupants.

The driver, a 27 year old Summerside male, has been charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Assault with a weapon, Mischief under $5000 and Breach of Probation.

The passenger, a 24 year old Charlottetown male, has been charged with Mischief under $5000, Fail to comply with an Undertaking, Breach of Probation and other unrelated theft charges.

Both males appeared in Provincial Court yesterday and have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance.
