Impaired Drivers Charged Laid over the Weekend.

At 4:00 am Saturday morning, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a single vehicle collision that occurred on the UPEI campus near the soccer turf field.  The driver had minor injuries that were treated by IEMS on scene.  Police determined that the driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested.

A 19 year old  Summerside male was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle after he provided breath samples that were almost three (3) times the legal limit.  The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

On Sunday shortly after 1:00 pm, Charlottetown Police Service responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver.  Police located the vehicle in a parking lot on Kensington Road.  Police determined that the driver was impaired by drugs and was arrested.  An officer trained as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) confirmed the driver was under the influence of drugs and made the demand that a blood sample be provided.  Impaired driving charges are pending the blood sample toxicology results.

Charlottetown Police Services Street Crime Unit, with the assistance from the Rapid Tactical Deployment Unit and Patrol Officers executed a Controlled Drugs and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence on Hillsborough Street yesterday.

The search resulted in the seizure of:

• 120 grams of crystal meth (approximate street value of $18,000 dollars)
• 251 tablets/capsules of various prescription pills such as hydromorphone, Ritalin, Alprazolam and Zolpidem.
• 109 grams of cannabis
• $7900.00 cash
• Replica firearm and machete
• Scale and other packaging materials

A 27 year old female and a 34 year old male, both from Charlottetown have been charged with:

• 5 counts of CDSA 5(2) Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Possession of a weapon
• Breach of Probation

Both appeared in court this morning and have been remanded in custody and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services Street Crime Unit are currently at the scene of a drug investigation taking place at a residence on Hillsborough Street.  There is no risk to the public.  More information will be provided tomorrow.

In response to public complaints of vehicles not yielding to pedestrians on St Peters Road, Charlottetown Police Services conducted strategic enforcement over the last few weeks  and have utilized a plain clothes Officer posing as a pedestrian.

On February 19th, Officers issued five (5) HTA (Highway Traffic Act) tickets under section 190(1) “failing to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk” which carries a fine of $275.00 dollars.

On February 23rd, Officers returned to the same area and issued five (5) more tickets under the same section 190(1).

Police will continue strategic enforcement throughout the City.

Police would like to take this opportunity to remind drivers to pay attention to cross walks and yield to pedestrians waiting to cross.  It is also the pedestrians responsibility to use  caution at crosswalks – do not assume drivers have seen you, make eye contact and wait for the vehicle to stop,  pay particular attention if you are crossing a 4 lane road such as University Avenue, ensure all lanes of traffic have stopped and proceed with caution.

At 10:45 am yesterday morning (Feb 22), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint that a Taxi driver had just had her wallet and cell phone stolen by a male being dropped off at a location on the Kensington Road.

Officers were directed to a building in which the male had entered.  A search of that building resulted with the arrest of the male suspect.  The suspect had broken into an unoccupied unit while inside the building and was found to be in possession of four knives on his person.

A 27 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with theft under $5000 dollars, obtain transportation by fraud, break and enter and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.  He has been released from custody with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Yesterday morning (Feb 18), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a theft from vehicle complaint that occurred overnight at a residential property on Beach Grove Road.  A wallet had been stolen from the vehicle and a credit card had been fraudulently used at a local gas station.

Video surveillance from the gas station was obtained and Officers were able to identify the two suspects.   By late afternoon, both suspects were located and arrested.

An 18 year old Charlottetown female and a 30 year old Charlottetown male have both been charged with unauthorized use of a credit card and breach of probation.  They were released with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

At 3:35 pm yesterday afternoon (Feb 17), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of two males fighting outside a residence on Oak Drive.  Both male knew each other and did not sustain any significant injuries.

As a result of the investigation, a 36 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with assault and mischief under $5000 dollars.  He has been released with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

On Friday February 11th, Charlottetown Police Street Crime Unit arrested a male and female following a targeted traffic stop on Capital Drive and seized a quantity of methamphetamine, cash and drug paraphernalia.

A 40 year old female and a 35 year old male, both from Marshfield, have been charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

They were released from custody with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

At 7:35 pm Friday (Feb 12th), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a male causing a disturbance at a business on University Avenue.

Upon arrival Police learned that a male had entered the store and began to argue with a female worker whom was his girlfriend.  The male was intoxicated and when asked to leave by other staff, he assaulted one person, threatened others and overturned clothing racks.  He then left prior to Police arriving.

The male was located a short time later and arrested.   A 20 year old Souris male has been charged with assault, causing a disturbance and three (3) counts of uttering threats.   He was lodge in jail overnight and released with conditions the following day.  He will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

While on routine patrol at 1:15 am Sunday morning, Officers observed a vehicle driving erratically and performed a traffic stop on Riverside Drive.  The vehicle driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested.

A 28 year old Charlottetown female was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.  The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.
