Taking Vehicle Without Consent – Several Charges Laid

At approximately 4:30 am on Saturday morning, Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a male taking a vehicle from the owner without consent and was last seen on Pownal Street.

Police located the vehicle near the mall on University Avenue and attempted to pull it over but it accelerated away and fled.   No pursuit was initiated.   Officers located the vehicle a short time later on Hope Drive at which point the suspect vehicle collided head on with a Police vehicle.   A second Police vehicle was able to box the suspect vehicle to prevent it from leaving.   The driver did not comply with Officer demands to stop and continued to attempt to flee.   Officers had to break the window and pull the driver out.

The driver displayed signs of impairment and was brought back to the Charlottetown Police Department and failed the breath tests.

A 37 year old Montague male was subsequently charged with taking a motor vehicle without consent, flight from Police, dangerous driving, assault with a weapon and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The accused was released later in the day on conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.    No injuries were sustained during this incident.

While on routine patrol at 2:15 am Sunday morning (Feb 27), Police observed a vehicle that was driving erratically and pulled it over on Longworth Avenue.

The Officer determined that the driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested.  The driver was taken back to the Police station to provide breath samples which were over twice the legal limit.

A 23 year old Stratford male was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.   The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Over the last week Charlottetown Police Services has seen an increased volume of complaints reporting thefts from vehicles.  The majority of the cases have occurred in the downtown core.

Charlottetown Police will be stepping up patrols in these areas.

Residents can take some effective and simple preventative measures such as:

1. Do not leave valuables such as purses, wallets and electronic devices in vehicles
2. Always keep your doors locked

Residents are also encouraged to immediately report suspicious activity to Police.

At 9:15 pm last night (Feb 22), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of two intoxicated males causing a disturbance and not following masking rules at a business on Capital Drive.  Responding Officers spoke with the males upon arrival and determined that both were under the influence of alcohol and had been belligerent with staff and not following masking rules inside the business establishment.  Both were asked to leave and did so without issue and confirmed to Police that there were not driving and were on foot.

An e-watch camera in the area captured the men enter a vehicle that was parked on the Lower Malpeque Road and head west on Capital Drive.  The responding Officers were able to catch up to the vehicle and pull it over near the Causeway.  The driver was arrested and taken back to the Police station to provide breath samples.

A 23 year old Cornwall male was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle.   The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services is investigating a complaint of a vehicle passing a school bus with flashing red lights engaged on Tuesday morning.

At approximately 8:15 am on Tuesday morning (February 15th), a school bus was stopped in the westbound lane on the Royalty Road (near the Upton Road/Royalty Road intersection)  with its’ flashing red lights activated awaiting a student pick up.   A dark colored Ford F150 was approaching the bus from the opposite direction (eastbound) and failed to stop for the student and the school bus.

Charlottetown Police Services Street Crime Unit, with the assistance from the Rapid Tactical Deployment Unit and Patrol Officers executed a Controlled Drugs and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence on Kensington Road yesterday.

The Rapid Tactical Deployment Unit used tear gas during entry to ensure the safety of the occupants and Officers.   Police had information that the suspect had firearms in the residence and that entry doors were fortified.

The search resulted in the seizure of:

• 235 grams of crystal meth
• 141 grams of cocaine
• 2668 tablets of speed (methamphetamine)
• 1068 tablets of hydromorphone
• Street value of drugs is approximately $99,000.00 dollars
• $6400.00 cash
• three (3) loaded firearms
• seven (7) replica airsoft/bb guns
• bear spray and numerous knives
• four (4) digital scales, an automated money counter  and other packaging materials

A 39 year old Charlottetown male will been charged with several counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, several firearm related charges and breach of a weapons prohibition order.

The accused remains in custody and will appear before the court later today for a remand hearing.

At 9:00pm last night (Feb 8), Charlottetown Police Services responded to an assault complaint at a residence on Queen Street.

The investigation led to the arrest of a male who had sprayed a female in the face with some type of irritant.   The female suffered minor injuries and was treated at the QEH.

A 29 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with assault with a weapon,  possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, fail to comply with an undertaking and breach of probation.

The accused remains in custody at this time and will appear in court for a remand hearing shortly.

The City of Charlottetown would like to notify businesses and residents that a convoy-style protest planned for Saturday, February 5 has been postponed. At this time, we are not able to confirm when or if it is being re-scheduled.

The safety of Charlottetown residents and businesses remains the number one priority of the City Corporation and Charlottetown Police Services. The situation remains fluid, and the City of Charlottetown and Charlottetown Police Services will continue to monitor and inform the public of any changes that may arise.
