Single Motor Vehicle Collison – Impaired Driving Charge Laid

At approximately 00:50 this morning (June 13), Charlottetown Police Services responded to reports of a vehicle that had struck a light standard in the round about on St Peters Road intersecting with Oakland Drive.   Upon arrival Police observed the vehicle but the driver was not in the vehicle.  Police located a male walking on Oakland Drive and detained him for the purpose of the collision investigation.  The male initially provided police a false name but Officers were able to make a positive ID and determined that he was impaired by alcohol. The male was arrested and brought back to the Police Station where he refused to provide adequate breath samples.

A 20 year old North Bedeque male has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample upon demand and obstructing Police.  He will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services is reminding the public  to  plan ahead and never get behind the wheel when their ability to drive is impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Charlottetown Police Services was contacted by Winnipeg Police Service mid February 2024 requesting assistance with a fraud investigation that originated out of Charlottetown.

The victim is a Winnipeg resident and reported to Winnipeg Police that he had been contacted via Facebook Messenger informing him of a government grant that was available to him.   He followed instructions and was contacted by the fraudster acting as a government employee.   The victim was instructed that he qualified for a $150,000 dollar grant but was required to send $4,000.00, which the victim complied with.

As a result of this Investigation, 23 year old Adedemola Afolabi was arrested and subsequently charged with fraud under $5000.   The accused was released with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court on June 27th.

On Thursday morning (June 6, 2024) Charlottetown Police Services responded to a break and enter complaint from a restaurant on University Avenue.  Police learned that the male suspect entered the establishment via a drive thru window  two days prior and stole liquor and a tablet.  Video surveillance was reviewed which resulted in Police being able to identify the male.  Later in the day, Police located the suspect and arrested him.

A 30 year old Charlottetown male was subsequently charged with break and enter and breach of probation.  He was released with conditions a few hours later.

On July 9th, Police responded to a stolen vehicle complaint that occurred on Norwood Road.  At approximately 7:00 pm, an Officer observed the stolen vehicle going through a drive thru on Mount Edward Road.   To avoid the vehicle from fleeing from Police, Officers boxed it in with their vehicles and arrested the driver without incident.

The same 30 year old Charlottetown male was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 dollars and breach of probation.  The accused appeared in Provincial Court this morning and has been remanded in custody.

Since Friday (June 7th), Charlottetown Police Services responded to three separate complaints of a vehicle driving around the city shooting at people with a bb/airsoft gun.

The first complaint was received Friday at 1:00pm.  Police learned from a Charlottetown Rural School representative, that  two female students had been shot with an air soft gun while at lunch.   The students  did not sustain any injuries.  This matter is still under investigation.

A second complaint was received shortly after 6:00pm on Friday.  Officers responded to the corner of Water and Prince Street where another “drive by” style shooting occurred.   While escorting a witness and victim to the Police Station for interviews, Police observed the suspect vehicle and pulled it over.  Five youths were inside the vehicle.  A 15 year old Charlottetown male youth was arrested and subsequently charged with Assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes and discharging an air gun with intent to wound.  The youth was later released with conditions and will appear in provincial court at a later date.   The victim did not sustain any injuries.

The third complaint was received on Saturday (June 8) at 7:45pm.  In this case, two male youths were walking on Fitzroy Street, when a white Hyundai Elantra drove by  and shot at them with what is believed to be an air soft gun.   The victim was shot in the leg and described the persons in the vehicle as male youths.

Through the course of these investigations, police have learned of a TikTok trend or challenge that encourages people to shoot others or property with airsoft or BB guns. Police warn anyone influenced by these videos that such acts are very dangerous. TikTok users are encouraged to report these videos to TikTok to help reduce content that promotes violent behavior.

Police take these types of complaints seriously, and anyone caught participating will be charged with weapon offenses.

At approximately 11:55 pm on Wednesday June 5, 2024, the Charlottetown Police Services Street Crime Unit  arrested a male following an investigation into the illicit drug trade of selling cocaine in Charlottetown.

Officers seized 150 grams of cocaine, a machete, collapsible baton, $5700.00 cash, cell phone, digital scale and a vehicle.

A 42 year old Stratford male will be charged with CDSA 5(2) –  Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

The accused has been released from custody with conditions and will appear in Province Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating an assault that took place at an establishment on Kent Street.  The assault took place at 2:00 am on Saturday May 18, 2024.  Police are seeking public assistance with identifying the male in the short video clip.

File 2024705910: At 11:30 pm Friday night (May 24), while on routine patrol, an Officer observed a vehicle driving erratically on Kent Street and pulled it over. The driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested.

A 31 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with impaired driving after providing breath samples that were over twice the legal limit.

File 2024706601: At 2:30 am Saturday morning (May 25), while on routine patrol, Police observed a vehicle driving erratically and pulled it over on Weymouth Street.  The driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested. She was brought back to the Police Station and refused to provide breath samples.

A 28 year old Charlottetown female has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample upon demand.

File 2024710679: At 10:40 pm Saturday night (May 25), Officers responded to a possible impaired driving complaint and located it in a business parking lot on University Avenue.  The driver displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol and was arrested. The driver was brought back to the Police Station and refused to provide breath samples.

A 19 year old Breadalbane PE male has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample upon demand.

All accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

A 23 year old Kingston PEI male has been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample upon demand and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

On Wednesday May 22, 2024 at approximately 5:10pm, the Charlottetown Police Services Street Crime Unit conducted a targeted vehicle stop and arrested a male following an investigation into the illicit drug trade of selling cocaine in Charlottetown.

Officers seized 32 grams of cocaine, 6 grams of MDMA (ecstasy), a small amount of cash and a cell phone.

37 year old Kiel Robert Stewart from Cornwall has been charged with CDSA 5(2) –  Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, driving while Prohibited  and one charge of failing to comply with a release order.   The accused was bound by a release order stemming from another charge of driving while prohibited in Nov/2023 and a charge of Assault with a weapon in Dec/2023.

The accused has been remanded in custody and will appear in Province Court at a later date.

At 8:08 pm Saturday evening (May 18), Police attempted to pull over a blue Kawasaki motorcycle on Thompson Drive.  The motorcycle did not stop and fled at a high rate of speed, Police did not pursue for public safety reasons.  The last known direction of the motorcycle was captured by E-Watch surveillance heading North on Brackley Point Road.
