Motor Vehicle / Pedestrian Collision

March 5, 2019 – 8:05pm

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating a Motor Vehicle/Pedestrian Collision that occurred last night.

Two pedestrians were crossing from the Wendy’s side of University Avenue to the A&W side.  They were not crossing at a crosswalk.  A vehicle travelling northbound did not see them and struck the male and female pedestrians.

Both pedestrians were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Charlottetown Police Services are reminding the public to keep their vehicle doors locked and remove valuables from inside.

Police have seen an increase in theft from vehicles over the last few nights.  Streets targeted were:

• Greenfield Ave.
• Valley St.
• Dunkirk St.
• Nassau St
• Newland Crescent

Charlottetown Police has stepped up patrols in those areas.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a possible impaired driver at the West Royalty Liquor Store.  The responding Officer located the vehicle in a parking lot on University Avenue and determined that the driver displayed signs of impairment by alcohol.

The 50 year old male driver, who provided breath samples over three times the legal limit was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.  He was taken to the Provincial Correctional Centre and held until sober.

The accused was later released and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Sunday February 24 – 2:40am

Charlottetown Polices Services responded to a 911 call reporting that a male was unresponsive behind the wheel of a vehicle at the intersection of Malpeque Road and the Arterial Highway at 2:40am Sunday morning.

Upon arrival, Police located the male driver and determined that he was impaired by alcohol and was arrested.  A 20 year old Cornwall man was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

February 20 2019 – 9:00pm

Charlottetown Police Services responded to 911 call last night reporting a possible impaired driver at the corner of University and Belvedere Avenue.

Police located the vehicle and determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol.  The driver, a 24 year old Stratford man was arrested and subsequently charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services has taken enforcement action to prevent and deter drivers who chose to pass school buses and are working in conjunction with a Provincial initiative to curb this behaviour.

Drivers who fail to stop for school buses when flashing red lights are displayed can be charged under section 202(1) of the HTA (Highway Traffic Act).

So far in 2019, Charlottetown Police have charged 4 drivers in January and 2 in February.

Upon conviction:

• Fines range from $1000 to $5000
• The fines carry 12 demerit points and a 3 month Driver License cancellation
• The driver will be required to pay a $100 reinstatement fee and take a defensive driving course within six months of getting the license back
• The driver will then be on a one year administrative driving probation period

Enforcement action will continue throughout the school year.  Most residents respect and abide by the school bus passing laws, but for the few that do not, Police have zero tolerance for this dangerous and reckless bahaviour and will lay charges when sufficient evidence exists.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to an erratic driving complaint yesterday at 6:00pm.

Police located the vehicle on St Peters Road and conducted a traffic stop.  The driver displayed signs of impairment by drugs and was evaluated by one of the Charlottetown Police DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) trained Officers.

A 42 year old Charlottetown man was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle (by drug).  The accused will appear in court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services have made an arrest in relation to the Robbery that occurred at Needs Convenience on Brackley Point Road last week (reported last week Feb15).

A 23 year old Charlottetown man was arrested on February 16th and subsequently charged with Robbery, Wearing a disguise with intent and Breach of Probation.

The accused has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on February 28th.

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating a Robbery that occurred Thursday morning at 6:40am (Feb 14) at the Needs Convenience Store at 180 Brackley Point Road.

Police are requesting the public’s help in identifying the male depicted in the attached video.
