Theft from Vehicles

With the warmer weather upon us, theft from vehicles overnight has become more prevalent. Charlottetown Police Services are reminding the public to keep their vehicle doors locked and remove valuables from inside.

Police have responded to several occurrences of  theft from vehicles over the last few nights.  Streets targeted were:

• Upper Hillsborough St.
• Kensington Rd.
• Callbeck Cres.
• Elena Crt.
• Alexander Dr.
• Lewis Point Rd.
• Wedgewood Ave.
• Falconwood Dr.

Charlottetown Police has stepped up patrols in these areas.

While on routine patrol Saturday morning at 1:20am, Officers noticed a vehicle driving erratically on Great George Street.   A traffic stop ensued and the Officer determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol and arrested.

A 38 year old Charlottetown male was subsequently charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services conducted several Road Safety Check Points on St Patrick’s Day.

Charlottetown Police Services conduct these checkpoints in an effort to improve road safety by preventing and deterring motorists from drinking and driving.  Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death related to motor vehicle collisions and is preventable by planning ahead.

Check Points were conducted at four (4) separate locations: Malpeque Rd, St. Peters Rd., Grafton St. and Water St.

• 6 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act
• 1 male driver was issued a 7 day driving suspension after providing a breath sample that resulted in a warning.
• Several other drivers provided breath samples but passed
• 2 drivers were charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle during the weekend
• 1 driver may be charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drug pending toxicology test results

Charlottetown Police Services have charged a 26 year old Charlottetown man in relation to thefts from vehicles that occurred overnight on Saturday/Sunday.

At 3:25am Sunday morning, Police were called to the Ellis Road area in response to a complaint of a male seen going through vehicles.  Police located the 26 year old male and subsequently charged him with Trespass at Night, Possession of Stolen Property and Breach of Probation.

The accused was released with condition consisting of reporting to Charlottetown Police every Monday and abiding by a daily curfew between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am.   He will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Police are reminding the public to protect themselves from these types of thefts by locking their doors and not leaving anything of value inside the vehicle.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to numerous impaired driving reports over the weekend and laid charges in three (3) separate occurrences.

Saturday at 11:25pm, a caller reported a vehicle that was swerving on the road, the caller had been following it from Covehead.  Police located the vehicle on the Brackley Point Road.  The driver,  a 30 year old Charlottetown male, displayed signs of impairment by alcohol, was arrested and subsequently charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

Sunday morning at 02:55am, Police responded to a compliant of a possible impaired driver on Kent Street.  Police located the vehicle on Grafton Street. The driver,  a 21 year old Charlottetown female, displayed signs of impairment by alcohol, was arrested and subsequently charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

Sunday at 5:50pm, Police responded to a complaint of two males believed to be intoxicated left a business on the East Royalty Road.  Police were able to locate the vehicle on St Peters Road.  The driver, a 42 year old Charlottetown male displayed signs of impairment by drugs and was arrested.   Charges of Impaired Driving by Drugs are pending toxicology test results.

Individuals charged will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services have made an arrest and laid several charges in relation to recent theft from vehicles that have occurred in the Downtown area.

A 45 year old Charlottetown man was arrested at 4:30am this morning (March 14).  The accused is a repeat offender with 169 criminal code convictions on his record and is now being charged with eight (8) new offences:

• Theft Under $5000 (x2)
• Breach of Probation (x3)
• Fail to comply with an Undertaking (x2)
• Trespass at Night

The accused has been remanded in custody and will appear in Provincial Court  on Friday March 15th 2019.

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating a complaint of several power tools being stolen from a work van on MacWilliams Road in East Royalty.  The theft occurred overnight Thursday March 7-Friday March 8.

Tool brands are Dewalt, Bosch and Skil, all are marked with JV Construction.

On Friday March 8th,  Charlottetown Police Services responded to a complaint of a stolen vehicle from a local business on Capital Drive.

On Saturday while on routine patrol, Police located the vehicle driving on Walthen Drive and pulled it over.  The driver, a 41 year old Montague man was arrested on scene and subsequently charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

March 6 2019 – 10:02am

While on routine patrol yesterday morning, a traffic stop led Charlottetown Police to arrest a repeat Prohibited Driver.

Police checks on the driver determined that she was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle .  A 50 year old Covehead woman was subsequently charged with Prohibited Driving which falls under section 259(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Within the last year, the woman has been convicted on two separate occasions; Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle in March/2018 and  Prohibited Driving in August/2018.

The accused will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.
