The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has completed its investigation into the death of an adult male on October 15, 2025, concluding that officers acted lawfully during their interaction with him and that there is no evidence of criminality.

“It’s important to recognize this was a tragic event for the male and his family, along with the involved officers and support staff. This type of incident is deeply serious and impacts not only the individual’s loved ones, but also our officers and dispatchers, and our community.

We appreciate the work of the investigators and the important role they play. From the outset, our department fully cooperated with the investigation, and we are pleased to see its conclusion. We are satisfied the investigation confirms our view of the incident in that our officers acted appropriately and within their legal duties.

We deal with people in crisis every day and the interactions are overwhelming stabilized, and resolved without issue or incident.  With that, I want to also express my appreciation for the officers involved and acknowledge the professionalism and accountability they have demonstrated throughout this process.

As this matter has now concluded, no further information will be released.”

UPDATE: A 50-year-old male has been remanded into custody and charged with uttering threats (s. 264 CCC) and breach of probation (s. 730 CCC).

He is scheduled to appear in court on January 19.

“At approximately 9:45 a.m. today, Charlottetown Police Services received a report of a threat made by phone about a healthcare professional who works in Kings County.

Approximately 1.5 hours later, the accused was located in Charlottetown and arrested without incident. He remains in our custody and the incident remains under investigation.

This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”

Charlottetown Police Services is warning the public of a phone scam targeting grandparents. CPS has received reports from residents who have recently been contacted by someone claiming their grandchild is in trouble and that money is needed for their release or safety. In some instances, the scammer names the person’s grandchild or uses their personal information in an attempt to validate their request.

If you receive a suspicious call or request for money such as this – do not send money, do your due diligence first. For example, call your grandchild or another family member to verify the claims or requests.

Charlottetown Police Services is warning the public of a text scam related to past due parking tickets. CPS has received a number of reports from people who have recently received a text message indicating they have a past due parking violation which includes a link to make payment online. An image of the text message is included for reference purposes.

As a reminder, the City of Charlottetown only issues parking notices by mail and does not text residents to request payment.

If you have received a text message, do not reply or click on the link, CPS recommends deleting the message and blocking the number.

If you have replied and provided personal information or sent payment, please call our non-emergency line (902) 629-4172.

  • Secure your bike with a chain lock or u-lock
  • Lock at least one wheel and the frame to a fixed object

Charlottetown Police Services is warning the public about potential rental property scams taking place in the community. The department has received recent reports of rental scams where the renter provides a deposit, only to later find out that the property does not exist, or it is not owned or managed by them.

Typically, once money is sent, the scammer will stop all communication.

Common signs of a rental scam:

  • They don’t want to meet you
  • They pressure you to move in quickly without seeing the property
  • They ask you to send a deposit, holding fee, application fee or damage deposit before seeing the property
  • The price may be too good
  • There is no tenant screening process

Prior to sending a deposit, we encourage renters to do their research and schedule an in-person viewing of the rental property.

If you are the victim of a rental scam, report it to:

Be advised of their visible and increased presence at Colonel Gray High School

The Charlottetown Police Services (CPS) is advising residents and surrounding businesses of a training exercise that will be conducted today, Friday, June 27, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Colonel Gray High School (175 Spring Park Road). The exercise will bring a visible and increased presence of uniformed officers onto the school property for the day.

The purpose of the training is to create a real-time emergency situation that activates an integrated emergency response across multiple departments. Therefore, other than the location, officers and those participating in the exercise are not provided any advance details about what they are about to encounter. The exercise will include staff from the tactical response unit, crisis negotiators and critical incident command, along with other support areas.

The scenario will be monitored and overseen by Interim Chief McCarron and serves as a key part of CPS’s annual training.

Please note that access to the school property will be restricted to those participating in the training exercise which does not pose any threat to the public.

The exercise reinforces CPS’s commitment to maintaining safe schools and communities, building capacity in critical incident response and crisis de-escalation.

Our annual training exercise at Colonel Gray High School is now complete.

Today’s exercise was the culmination of our three-day training, which activated a real-time, multi-unit emergency response.

Did you know that our Tactical Response Unit (TRU) is a specialized unit with eight designated members – and the only tactical unit stationed in PEI. TRU members are also part of our patrol units and you will see them in the community as part of our regular community safety efforts.

Thank you for your patience and steering clear of the site today!
