Fiona Relief Fund – Text Message SCAM ALERT

In the wake of Hurricane Fiona, Charlottetown Police Services is warning of a new scam.

We have received some reports of people receiving text messages from a number claiming to be associated to the Hurricane Fiona Relief Fund.   The actual text message from the scammer is shown below.

The text message will come from various phone numbers but the message itself remains consistent.  Do not click on the link, simply delete the message and block the number.    Please share this scam information with friends and family to further reduce the number of potential victims.

The Red Cross, whom is coordinating the Provincial relief fund will not send text messages directing  you to apply for or receive funds.

While conducting surveillance yesterday, Officers from the Charlottetown Police Services  Street Crime Unit observed a hand to hand drug transaction between two men.  Both men were arrested and taken into custody.

Police seized a quantity of what is believed to be cocaine and crystal meth, drug paraphernalia, two knives and a baton.

A 25 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with two counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a weapon while prohibited, uttering threat and breach of probation.   The accused appeared in court this morning and has been remanded in custody.

A 52 year old Charlottetown male has been charged with possession of drugs and breach of probation.  The accused was released from custody with conditions.

Both men will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

At 00:50 am this morning (Sept 13th), Charlottetown Police Services responded to a report of two suspicious persons carrying liquor bottles and wearing masks leaving the water front area on Lower Water Street.

Officers determined that a break and enter had occurred at a business establishment.  The CPS Forensic Identification Section assisted on scene.  Video surveillance assisted in identifying the two male suspects whom were located and arrested a short time later.

An 18 year old Summerside male and a youth male were both charged with break and enter.  They were released from custody with conditions and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

Charlottetown Police Services are investigating the theft of a vehicle from a residence on St Peters Road. It was reported stolen Sunday morning (Sept 4th).  The last vehicle sighting was at 4:51 am travelling south on St Peters Road.

The vehicle is a black 2017 Honda HRV which was bearing PEI plate 214RS at the time of the theft.  The picture below is similar to the one stolen.

Charlottetown Police Services responded to a two vehicle collision this morning at 8:00am at the intersection of Upton Road and Regis Duffy Drive.

An SUV that was crossing the Upton Road from Regis Duffy Drive collided with a smaller automobile that was traveling north on Upton Rd.   Island EMS and Charlottetown Fire assisted with the extraction of the lone female driver of the smaller vehicle. She was transported to the QEH with serious injuries.  The driver of the SUV did not report any injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow the CPS accident reconstructionist conduct his investigation.   The investigation is ongoing and charges may be laid.

Charlottetown Police Services is investigating the theft of a boat trailer.  The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between August 1 and 15 from an empty lot on the Lower Malpeque Road.

The trailer is described as a Magic Tilt, 28 foot long tri-axle aluminum boat trailer.  The stolen trailer is pictured below.

At approximately 1:50 am on Sunday morning (Aug 21), Police were flagged down by several people indicating that they had just been pepper sprayed by someone in a vehicle driving by.

It was learned that earlier in the night, a verbal argument had taken place at a local drinking establishment.  A short time later, while walking on Water Street, a vehicle drove by and the passenger sprayed some type of irritant (believed to be being bear spray) onto three of the victims and continued to drive away.  Two other victims that were also involved with the same suspects reported to Police that they too were sprayed by an irritant at the intersection of Great George and Water Streets.

Police arrested both suspects an hour later.   A 20 year old female and 19 year old male, both from Charlottetown were subsequently charged with assault with a weapon and released with conditions.  They will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

For the second time in one week, Charlottetown Police Services has arrested the same 32 year old Charlottetown male that was charged with 16 offences last Friday and subsequently released from custody with conditions on Monday morning.

The accused was arrested and remanded in custody facing 16 criminal code offences last Friday (Aug 12).  He appeared in Provincial Court on Monday morning, at which time he was released from custody with conditions  to keep the peace, be of good behaviour and  appear in Provincial Court this morning (Aug 18) at 9:00am.    Following his release on Monday, he was captured on video surveillance at 6:10 pm entering a parked vehicle and stealing a laptop.   In addition to this offence, the accused also failed to attend court at 9:00am this morning at which time a warrant for his arrest was issued.  A member of the Street Crime Unit located him on Water Street this afternoon where he was arrested and taken into custody.

The accused has been remanded in custody and will appear in Provincial Court on Monday.
